Alfreda Gilmore was born on December 2, 1932 in Bowman, South Carolina to Orbia Sr. and Cora Gilmore. She was sixth child of nine children (Zola “Zoo” Summers, Ruth Patrick, Orbia “Buster” Gilmore Jr., Annerell “Ann” Fowler, Sam Gilmore, William Gilmore, Vernetta “Bernice” Witherspoon, and Ethel Hall. In her youth, she was a star basketball player in the SC Public School System.
Alfreda moved to New York in 1952, where she met and married Fred Douglas Robinson. They had five children Patsy Howard, Glenda Howard, Sandra Elliott, Winfred Robinson, and Wanda Buchanan.
On New Year’s Day in 1953, she was the first of her siblings to receive Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She would end up leading many family members to the Lord.
She was trained as a nurse’s aide. Called to home missions, Mother Robinson knew she had a unique calling to minister to the terminally ill. She led many souls to Christ prior to their home going.
Alfreda’s interests were gardening, sewing, cooking, and mentoring. She was active with her church as a member of the mother’s board, participating in the Nursing Home visitation ministry. Feeding the children missions were dear to her heart and she sponsored several African children.
Alfreda Robinson passed away on March 4, 2013 at age 80 in Columbia, SC from complications from cancer. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Fred Douglas Robinson; her children Glenda Howard, Sandra Elliott, Wanda Buchanan (spouse: Andre Buchanan), and Winfred Robinson; her grandchildren Moses Howard II, Jason Howard (spouse: Shamara Howard), Mercedes Robinson, Jeannine Buchanan, Andre Buchanan Jr., Nicole “Coco” Henderson; siblings Orbia Gilmore Jr., Ann Fowler, and Ethel Hall (spouse: Joseph Hall) She is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and many who Mother Robinson called adopted children.
Viewing of the body will be Saturday 3/9 6:00 pm -7:00 pm at the Bostick–Thomkins Funeral Home (2930 Colonial Drive Columbia, SC 29204). The funeral will be held at Bibleway of Atlas Road (2440 Atlas Rd Columbia, SC 29209) on Sunday, 3/10 at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery following the funeral.
