Steven Spears was a talented, joyful, intelligent, courageous man. He lived a complete, adventurous life. He was born in WHITEHORSE, Yukon on January 13th, 1951. In his youth, he was an extreme sky diver and became a national champion. Next he learned to ski and became a certified ski instructor in a single season. Later on, you’d have found him riding in the Australian Outback or attending one of his favorite Aussie Football games. In 1992, Steven married Maggie Campbell, in Australia. Steven was a successful Project Manager in Information Technology. He came to Olympia in 1993 on a career engagement. He loved this place and elected to stay. He had very successful personal and professional years in the Northwest. Steven loved his dogs Lucky, Bailey and Tazzie. He also had a passion for horses and spent time training and riding. Steven had a long lasting fight with alcohol addiction. He beat it and stayed sober for years. Then five years ago, Steven was diagnosed with cancer. He took on that fight too. His perseverance was remarkable. Steven ended his battles on January 7th, 2007. He will be missed by family and many friends. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
When I think of Steve I shall always remember the day he became a US citizen. He asked me to go with him to the swearing in ceremony in Seattle. It was a wonderful experience watching Steve do this, to see how much it truly meant to him. He was very proud that day as was I for him. I appreciated being included in a special moment in Steve's life.
One other memory I will share was going with Steve to pick out a dog at the local animal shelter. The dog we picked out that day turned out to be Taz. Initially Taz was meant to be a house dog but it was soon apparent that these two had a special bond and Steve became Taz's human. He really loved that dog, they were quite the pair. I'd often see them tooling down the street together in Steve's car and to this day I'm really not sure which one of them was driving.
Rock on Steve.

I met Steven on a project, while working for Dept. of Licensing. I had never worked in such a stressful environment but could always count on Steven to look at a situation, chew on it, digest it and spew out some twisted, hilarious, take on it. He taught, just by being himself, that righteous indignation is healthy as long as you let it go and get on with the next step. Steven, I know that you are making the best of this journey you have undertaken, this next step. I will always remember your courage in facing challenges and will never forget your laughter and smile. I am glad to have known you.

I came to know Steven, When I Moved to the Tumwater House. We became room mates, then friends...We helped each other out when times were tough, I was blessed with the time that I came to know, then care for Steven when things seem there darkest. We could find hope from a kind word, or just a friendly Good'day mate.
I'll miss you friend, may god watch over you and care you. I'll miss the talks we had going to ,then from Seatle. I'm a better person for having met you. Your friend & mate Leslie

I met Steve through my nephew, Doug, many years ago and loved hearing of their fun times as good friends. Steve was a very special guy and I enjoyed his company immensely when he had Thanksgiving dinner with our family a couple of years ago. He was a fighter and a good friend to many. I pray that he has found the peace that he has sought for so long.

Doug and I recently found a wonderful home for Steven's special Tazzie. As I read an email this evening from a a mutual friend of Tazzie's new owner Molly I had the urge to share her words with all of you...and Steve. I wish I could have done more for Steve while he was with us but in finding Tazzie's home I know I'm helping bring Steve peace now. Here is what was written: "Molly keeps running around work speaking the high praises of Tazzi. You'd think this was the only dog in the world...and the smartest...and the prettiest.....and the....oh-ad nauseam!!! But, she is so happy to have her in the family. I think Steve would approve. Molly cut out Steve's obituary so she never forgets where Tazzi came from. " Love to you Steve...
