Person Description:
Henrietta "Retta" Wright Mitchell
June 3, 1955 - November 16, 2005

A New Jewel in the Garden….

Hidden beneath the densest part of God’s secret garden, under the lilies,
beside the roses, near the violets, is a precious new jewel. The jewel was gently and
quietly removed from the Earth on Wednesday, November 16, 2005, and resettled in
our Father’s garden, near His heart for safekeeping, for nurturing, for restoration
after a long journey. The jewel that went home was our beloved
Sister, Henrietta “Retta” Wright Mitchell.

It would take more space than available to document the impact of her life,
but know this-everyone loved Retta! To Herbert Lee Mitchell, Sr., her husband of
31 years, she was the head of the household, a strong and loving partner; to her
precious daughter and best friend BeLinda, “Michelle”, she was a guiding light,
an endless supply of wisdom and understanding; to her rock steady and devoted
sons, Herbert Lee, Jr. and Kevin Bernard, and adopted son, Earl Henry Wright, Jr.,
she was both friend and encourager; to beloved grandsons Michael, Harry, Christian,
and granddaughter, Jessica Louise, she was a teacher of God’s word and His love,
as well as a source of hugs, kisses, and chocolate chip cookies; to her beloved
nephew / brothers, Earl Wright and David “Lewis” Gladney, she was the matriarch
who held the family together.

At Mount Olive Baptist Church, where Retta served faithfully, she was known
for her ministry of song. O yes, our Sister could sing, and sing she did, first with
Choir # 2, then as the director and advisor of the Junior Choir. Retta also served on
the Trustee Board, the Pastor’s Aide Board, the Bylaws Committee and the Recreation
Committee. She was a founding member of the Youth Saturday Series. Later, with the
creation of the Heaven’s Angels Praise Dancers, she would establish a cornerstone of
the Church’s Creative Ministry Heaven’s Angels were Retta’s joy. The Angels are a
cherubic group of multitalented little girls who have touched the hearts of many
throughout the area with their spirited and anointed praise interpretations.

Retta was an accomplished professional with experience in culinary arts;
she served as the lead cook at the Festival Center Piggly Wiggly in North
Charleston; she ministered as a certified nurses’ assistant for several years;
worked as a licensed cosmetologist.

Retta was employed as a Financial Counselor for Dupont Insurance Agency,
and most recently served as the probate consultant for FAMS, Family Assistance
Management Services, a nonprofit organization housed under the umbrella of the
Dupont Progressive Business Center.

But above all, Retta simply loved life! She was always on the go and never missed
an opportunity to visit family and friends. If she wasn’t visiting, she was inviting
everyone to her home for fellowship and good hot meals. Retta met strangers
and rarely forgot a face or name. She loved unconditionally and encouraged with
her whole heart. Retta’s light remained bright, even in the darkest moments, and
especially at the end as the pain became unbearable, but she knew and believed a
fundamental truth; If God brings you to it; He will see you through it.

It will come as no surprise that Retta’s highest praise was reserved for her
Lord and Savior, for she had walked with the Lord long enough to know that He
would not leave her, nor forsake her. She knew that He would take care of her,
that He would make a way that He would not put more on her that she could bear.
Retta knew that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.

Because our Lord and Savior lives, we know that Retta lives. And although
our grief is enormous, we celebrate because we know that she is with her Lord,
and her Mother, the late Mrs. Louise Wright; her Father, the late Deacon Henry
Wright, and her precious Sister, the late Mrs. Albertha, “Miss Eulee” King, and
all the other mighty souls who went home before her.

As Retta rests in the secret place of God’s garden, we can rest too,
secure and confident in the knowledge that she is a part of our future and
that one-day, we will rejoice with her again on the streets paved of gold.

Those who celebrate her life and legacy include a loving Husband,
Herbert Lee Mitchell, Sr.; a devoted Daughter, BeLinda Michelle Mitchell of
North Charleston, SC; devoted Sons, Herbert Lee Mitchell, Jr., and Kevin
Bernard Mitchell of Hollywood, SC, and an adopted son, Earl Henry Wright, Jr.
